Days before IU is expected to hire a new head coach, the interim basketball coach just kicked the 2 best returning players off the team.
This reminds me of my sophomore year of high school when a substitute teacher kicked me out of school for sleeping in study hall.
The circus made a stop in Bloomington in October and has never left town. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if we hired the Bearded Lady as the next head coach.
I bet I could add the most absurd post to this blog tomorrow as an April Fool's joke and most of you would believe it because it would just be par for the course.
And once again, the timing of this is absolutely priceless. What coach in their right mind would want to come work at this zoo?
I'm not going to defend Bassett and Ellis here because I do think they are acting like children and have probably been pains in the asses since Sampson left. However, what is Dakich trying to pull here? This disaster of a season is over and we are currently in talks with the next new coach (whoever that may be) and Dakich is now kicking the 2 best players off the team for missing some meetings. I understand that it is probably a case of complete of insubordination, but the fact is that Dakich is only going to be the coach for another couple of days. This only makes the whole program look even more disfunctional and immediately puts the new coach in an awkward situation.
There are some out there that think that maybe Dakich has just done the new coach a favor by cleaning house and not having the new coach inherit these problems. However, Bassett and Ellis are already saying that they would still be interested in possibly playing for a new coach. So, it looks like the new coach will need to deal with this regardless.
I'm disappointed to hear that Bassett and Ellis have been problems on this team, but if they are now gone, this program will be at the bottom of the Big Ten for the next 2-3 years. If this situation with Bassett and Ellis stays put, I can almost guarantee that Crawford will be next and probably McGee, Holman, and Thomas as well. It is possible that we could have a hard time just fielding a team next year.
Please tell me this is rock bottom.
How could Greenspan let this happen? The interim coach is booting players as we are trying to hire a new coach. I still can't believe this.
I am really wondering what coach in their right mind would take this job.
But I guess that's the news we are still waiting on and we'll have to see what happens on that front. Best of luck to whatever brave soul takes on this tall order.

any chance this is a sign that dakich will stay as coach? this will be one of the worst teams in ncaa history!

Maybe Dakich is trying to make sure that he does stay as IU coach. He realizes the only chance he has is if no one else wants the job. His recent action and the complete mis-handling of this entire situation makes the job more unattractive by the day. While Dakich is at it, he needs to fire Greenspan as well!
With that said, maybe this could make the situation more attractive for the next coach. At this point, the expectation bar is so low, even "Mini-Me" couldn't walk under it. There won't be any MAJOR winning expectations for the next couple years...which gives the new coach a chance to get his own players & system implemented even quicker. Heck, he might be able to bring in 5-6 of his own guys next year! This might even force IU to after more Coverdale types that want to win and play college basketball for 4-years and who are leaders on the court. Also, at this point, the stigma of living up to RMK isn't even in the picture. Just get this program clean & competitive and then lets talk about Championchips!
Maybe this was just the final stipulation by Pitino before he takes the job. Pitino demands "you guys clean house of all existing problems, then I will come in, grab the 10 guys playing on Court #1 at the HPER, and we we're going to the Sweet 16. And by the Sweet 16, I really mean the Elite 8 because I have never lost in the Sweet 16."
From the Hoosier Scoop:
Indiana athletics media relations director J.D. Campbell confirmed this morning that IU has dismissed Armon Bassett and Jamarcus Ellis from its basketball team.
Campbell gave no explanation about the reasons for or timing of the dismissals.
We will keep you updated with any developments in this story.
A source who wished to stay anonymous and is familiar with the program told the Indiana Daily Student that Dakich went to Director of Athletics Rick Greenspan with a request shortly after the Hoosiers lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Dakich asked Greenspan to remove Bassett, Ellis and two other players from the team immediately for several reasons, including failed drug tests, poor grades and talking back to coaches, the source said.
Why does Greenspan still have a job! I don't care if supposedly Pres. Herbert is the one of called for the Sampson hire. Everything Greenspan has done since fall seems to be completely wrong. This guy is unbelievable. The 'interim' coach should lose power once the final game ended. It's the offseason, IU would almost be better off with no coach for the time being. The players couldn't care less what Dakich says to them, there is no way a recruit would listen to him, either make him the actual coach or ask him to keep his mouth closed. I agree that he seems to be making the job as unattractive as possible now so he gets it by default.

we should have just rode it out with sampson. at least then we'd be in the final 4 this weekend and then we could cry about it next year. i still think they completely screwed up by naming dakich over mccallum. the players would have played harder for him, we might have been able to get his son, and the job would have looked much more desirable to possible coaches. obviously greenspan didn't know what was going on in the locker room at all.
dakich completely pissed me off with this move. "boo hoo my players are talking back to me. kick them off the team mr. greenspan." grow a pair you freaking scrote. maybe they deserve to be kicked off, but it's not his place at this point.
I'm taking a video camera with me to the gym tomorrow... see if i can get a walk on since we probably won't have any scholarships.
Taber and Finkelstink being the leaders on the team next year would be appauling. any chance we can recruit at the state pen? probably can't compete with calipari there (I'd still take him and Dorsey evethough Dorsey's 37 years old)
brad
however, i still think iu will win the big 10 next year. got to be an optimist
