IU 77 UConn 73

"UConn-not beat IU!" says Chris Harrell shortly after the Hoosiers pick up a great road win. That may not read as well as it sounded just minutes after IU picked up the big win. Of course, we were still giddy at that point. I still thought it was worthy as a lead-in to this posting. Had the Hoosiers lost this one, there would be plenty of things to complain about, such as the rebounding, the officiating, the 19-point swing in the first half, the excessive fouling, and the inability to stop the dribble-drive. But they got a big win on the road and that's all that matters. The FT shooting was outstanding at 20-21, including 2-2 by Calloway and 4-4 by Bassett in the final minute. Those were big free throws to step and knock down. Wilmont was unbelievable and D.J. continued to play at a high level. Let's hope there were not any long-term injuries -- Calloway was clearly gimpy and Ratliffe appeared to re-injure his wrist. Hopefully, they will both be available for the Illinois game. Overall Team Performance: A- Again, there are definitely some areas that were less than impressive (especially the rebounding), but anytime you go into UConn and come out with a win, that's always going to be an A- or higher. D.J. White: B+ You'd certainly like D.J. to battle for more than 3 rebounds in a physical game like this, but he was excellent on the offensive end. Even with a 7' 3" guy guarding him, D.J. was still commanding the double-team. I thought he did a nice job of passing out of the double-team -- either for an assist (like the nice one to Mike White for a dunk) or he would pass it back out and then quickly re-post and get the ball in even better post position. He's been looking back in form the last 5 games now. Mike White: B+ "40 Cent" was given his first chance for serious minutes and played pretty well. Again, a common theme on the negative side is that you would have liked to see him come away with more rebounds. But all in all, I thought he played pretty damn good -- a nice dunk, a nice block, a couple other buckets, and 2 very important free throws late in the game. Armon Bassett: B+ Started great and finished great, but the middle was a bit "iffy". Came out of the gate on fire by hitting 3 straight trifectas. Then, at the end of the game, stepped up and calmly hits all 4 free throws in the final few possessions of the game. Those were big-time free throws for a freshman to step up and hit. Roderick Wilmont: A Considering that I said I don't mind him shooting a lot as long as he is hitting around 45%....well, then I certainly don't have a problem with 73%. Led the team in scoring and rebounding with 8-11 FGs, 2-2 FTs, 5-8 3-PT FGs. Also added in 3 steals for good measure. Earl Calloway: B+ Back-to-back games with 8 assists. Pretty gutsy performance because he was clearly in pain and limping in the second half. A.J. Ratliffe: C+ Only 10 minutes and I fear that was because he re-injured his wrist when he got tackled. I was actually surprised the officials called that one a foul. Joey Shaw: B- A couple ugly turnovers late in the game, but overall he played pretty well. Lance Stemler: D Continues to struggle as of late. Bendeman: F Took him 12 seconds to come in and commit a turnover. Can we have that scholarship back please? Poll Questions: 13 out of 17 correctly predicted today's win. 12 votes for Top 25 worthy, 4 votes for maybe, and 1 vote for not just yet. Percentage chance at at least a share of the Big 10 title: the top vote receivers were 20% (6 votes), 30% (4 votes), 70% (2 votes), 0% (2 votes), 60% (1 vote), 40% (1 vote), 10% (1 vote).

I've never seen a 1st half so dominated by officials! Are you kidding me? One of the officials actually had a steal!

was that the same official that stopped our break by knocking wilmont down? they're in bonus with 12:21 to play?

how about your boy wilmont jd? how about mike white!? i hope this is a sign of things to come! big win to beat all 8 of them(officials included). isn't it an intentional foul when you just grad the guy's jersey?

That's what I thought about the jersey grab. Is that just an NBA call, or maybe you have to be at home. Not as pretty as the first 6 minutes, but nice road win. My favorite part of the game was the way they were finally able to execute in the last two minutes of a close game on the road. Road again Tuesday and then a few home games including Wisconsin.

Weekend is off to a good start. One down, one to go. Go Colts!!

Box score out now probably isn't official yet, but did they really get outrebounded by 17 boards?! But 20-21 from the line including 4-4 in the last minute and 40 Cent 2-2 on the day.

What a roller coaster of a game. The free throw shooting was the difference. IU was nearly perfect and UCONN missed so many clutch gree throws. As far as the rebounding, I wouldn't have been suprised if we had been outrebounded by 30. They had so many offensive rebounds. I cannot remember them shooting much from the outside.

Tremendous win. They showed a lot os poise late in that first half. They blew the 14 point lead and actually trailed by 5. Then IU fought back and was set to be up three at the half when UCONN drilled that 3.

Did anyone notice the Bendeman sighting? I think he traveled on his only touch. He is worthless. I am also starting to think Bendeman is rubbing off on Stemler. He is ice cold right now. Mike White stepped up today. He has a tough time finishing around the basket though.

Bears and Colts in the Super Bowl!

I would like to point out that in Jeff's email today before the game he predicted the final score of IU 77 UConn 72. Actual final score: IU 77 UConn 73.

And that is why this is his blog!

I won't be shocked if IU is not in the Top 25, but I firmly believe they should be. Here's my argument:

First, of the teams ranked #20 to #32, 10 of them lost at least once this week and 2 of them lost twice.

Second, IU is hot right now. Won 5 in a row and 9 of their last 10.

Third, IU's full season resume now looks very good. If you actually looked at the full season at this point, rather than just bumping teams up or down a couple slots based on the past week, then IU's season is definitely worthy of Top 25. They now have nice wins over some quality teams such as UConn (on the road), Michigan State (ranked #24 at the time), and Southern Illinois. But the big differentiator for IU comes when you look at the losses. There are now several teams with 4 and even 5 losses, but IU's losses are all close losses and were at Duke, at Kentucky, at Ohio State, and Butler (neutral site).

Based on the whole season, I personally think they SHOULD be ranked #20 or so, but the reality is that a team is not going to jump 13 spots in a single week. Instead, I am predicting they will actually be #26.

I guess it's really not that important as long as IU continues to play well and win games, but I sure do like to see a number before the word "Indiana".

I think Tom is on to something. How else can we explain Stemler's demise? It only makes sense that Bendeman is rubbing off on him. I'd like to know what's going on with Bendeman? I liked the kid when he came to IU. He has a nice shooting touch. Its dissappointing to see him completely suck. Its like he's never played organized basketball before. I wonder if he has mentally checked out? I hate to see a 6'11" player go to waste.

The Inside College Basketball Free Ticket segment was really well done. A great recruiting tool. Sampson's basement is the ultimate Hoosier Basement...except I didn't see a kegerator so the Dart Bar still has a slight edge.
