Inside The Numbers: IU 83 Howard 60

  • Christian Watford -- double/double with 14 pts and 11 rebs.  also 5-5 FTs
  • Tom Pritchard -- 5-6 FGs
  • Mo Creek -- team-leading 17 pts including 2-4 from the arc
  • Jeremiah Rivers -- mixed results with 6 pts, 4 rebs, 4 assts, 1 stl, 1 blk, but also had 4 TOs and just 2-8 from the field
  • Verdell Jones -- Just 4-12 from the field
  • Jordan Hulls -- 5 assts, 0 turnovers
  • Bobby Capobianco -- not even looking at the numbers, but there will be better days ahead
  • Matt Roth -- 1-1 in just 7 minutes.  We have to find a way to get him on the floor and in position to knock down the 3-ball.
  • Derek Elston -- 6-7 from the field and a sensational overall effort
  • Devan Dumes -- 3-5 FGs in limited time
  • Jobe and Munirue -- both played, but nothing major to report.

did you call him "Booby" on purpose? i think i'd be afraid to call capo anything other than sir. i'm not a big VJIII fan.

One game is not probably not a fair sample, but is Elston the player we've been waiting to see again since Nover graduated?

First time watching the Hoosiers this year. I was excited with what I saw. Elston will definitely be a stud. (Good think Knight isn't the coach anymore or Elston wouldn't be at IU with that big ol' Tattoo. Although, Knight might have just cut that arm off.)I actually liked their tempo and pushing it up the floor. I also think we will now have a more consistent "down low in da paint" game.

2012 IU will win their 6th NCAA Championship. Obviously, this only happens if the Mayan calendar resets and their predictions are false!!

Coach - No, "Booby" was definitely an accident, I have corrected it in the post.

Ok, ok, you're not a big fan of VJIII, we get it. I still am.

Healy - I hope the answer to your question is "yes, and then some". Obviously, meaning that hopefully he is a better actor.

Ben - that was a pleasant visual of Knight cutting Elston's arm off. And the Mayans are idiots.

I'm with Benny-boy on the Elston props. He's a winner. What I like is that he has basketball IQ. He seems to know where to be on the floor. That comes from a lifetime of good coaching in the State of Indiana.

Granted, this is Howard, but I do like that they're pushing the tempo and seem to have some guys who can finish with the dreaded Dunk Shot or Stuff Shot (depends on Laz's mood).

Rivers looks like a real point guard. He's a floor general. He knows when to test the defense, pass or take the shot.

Jordan Hulls looks pretty good. I can see him contributing this year and being a 4 year leader at IU. Again, he's got basketball IQ.

Jobe...He makes me think of Cerrano from Major League. Unpredictable and out of control and a physical speciman. He's hilarious. He totally gives a guy a forearm shiver and then can't understand the foul call. Classic. Anyway, I love the motor and the effort. Wish we could have got him as a freshman, redshirted him, and put him through 5 years. But, now we have Bawa.

Go Hoosiers.

i like the jobe/cerrano comparison! actually not real happy with rivers play because i think he's much better than he played. i like how hulls doesn't turn it over or force anything. did i mention i'm not a big VJIII fan?

I completely agree on the Jobe/Cerrano comparison, that is perfect!

With Rivers size and athleticism, he should be able to do whatever he wants and dominate against teams like Howard.

Just start calling VJIII "Vaj"...as in "sleeve of wizard".

I don't know much about Rivers and I have the bar set so low from last year that I'm not sure what to expect. I'm glad to hear that he's got more skill that he showed vs Howard.
